Heidi’s artwork focuses on "in between" spaces, where conflicting ideas and identities intersect. A fourth-generation Japanese American, bi-racial, bisexual, ex-Mormon artist and new mother after loss, she has lots of history that she is still unpacking and exploring through art. Her work celebrates the idea that we all live in the "in between" in some way--where grief and joy, conflicting ideas, and mixed identities coexist. She often conveys this sometimes uncomfortable "in between" space by layering multiple mediums upon one another and juxtaposing beauty with the mundane or tragic (as in her "rage flower" and "bathroom altar" series).
