desert dreamland no. 1 (framed original on paper)
10.5x12.5 inches framed
watercolor, acrylic paint, graphite, and pastel on paper
Heidi’s most recent collection-in-progress, entitled Desert Dreamland, is a meditation on new life and loss amidst a chaotic and yet still beautiful world. The first half of works were created early on in her first pregnancy in Tucson, Arizona. The colors and movement of these early work reflect the anxious excitement and joy of seeing the first heartbeat and anticipating new life. After suffering a miscarriage on the cusp of her second trimester, she decided to revisit the series and add a chapter exploring loss amid dwindling options for all women seeking reproductive services based on their needs, hopes for the future, and health. These pieces are referred to as “sunset goodbyes” and reflect a more muted, darker palette and incorporate repurposed and torn up older works collaged together to represent finding new life in dashed plans.
